The sparkling boulevards, the majestic Grand Place, and the lively markets are all well known, yet the allure of the Belgian coast beckons me. This past week, I decided to take a break from the urban grind and experience a day trip to Ostende (Ostend), one of Belgium’s most charming coastal cities.
My journey began early in the morning, when the cool, salty breeze of the North Sea was still a distant thought. I boarded the train at Brussels Central Station, the vibrant energy of the city still pulsing around me. The train ride to Ostende is quite pleasant, taking about an hour and a half, and as I settled into my seat, I could hardly contain my excitement. The landscape outside my window shifted from dense urban architecture to the picturesque Belgian countryside—the fields painted in vivid hues of green, punctuated by charming farmhouses and the occasional grazing cow.
On arriving at Ostende station, I stepped off the train and felt the immediate change in the atmosphere. The air was tangy with salt, filled with the sound of seagulls squawking above and the distant lapping of waves. The coastal city had a laid-back vibe that contrasted sharply with the frenetic energy of Brussels. I took a moment to breathe deeply, relishing the briny scent that filled my lungs, and I was immediately transported into a different world.
My first stop was the iconic Ostende beach, which runs for miles along the coast. The vast expanse of golden sand stretched before me, bordered by colourful beach cabins and umbrellas. It was still early, and most people were yet to arrive, allowing me to enjoy the tranquil beauty of the shoreline. I walked along the promenade, the gentle waves caressing my feet, and took in the stunning sight of the North Sea sparkling under the morning sun. The sound of laughter and chatter began to fill the air as more visitors arrived, eager for a day of fun in the sun.
After my leisurely stroll, I decided it was time to indulge in some local cuisine. I headed to one of the seaside cafés, where the aroma of fresh seafood wafted from the kitchen. I ordered a portion of ‘moules-frites’ (mussels and fries), a quintessential Belgian dish, while sipping on a crisp white wine. As I savoured every bite, I marvelled at how the sweet, briny flavour of the mussels blended beautifully with the creamy sauce, perfectly complemented by the golden, crunchy fries. It was hard not to feel content; here I was, directly by the sea, enjoying a meal that encapsulated the very essence of coastal Belgium.
With my stomach satisfied, I decided to explore the cultural offerings of Ostende. First on my list was the iconic Casino Kursaal, a stunning architectural gem overlooking the beach. Its neoclassical facade is adorned with ornate sculptures and grand columns, creating a sense of elegance that contrasts with the carefree beach atmosphere. As I stepped inside, the bright lights and sounds of the gaming tables welcomed me, adding a hint of glamour to my visit. While I didn’t partake in any games, I enjoyed a refreshing cocktail on the terrace, taking in sweeping views of the beach and the tranquil sea.
After my refreshing drink, I decided to venture out further, wanting to explore some of Ostend’s historical sights. One of the must-visit landmarks is the Ostend Lighthouse, a striking structure that offers a panoramic view of the North Sea. The lighthouse is located at the edge of the beach, standing proud against the backdrop of the sky.
After a few moments of contemplation, I and made my way toward Fort Napoleon, a fascinating historical fortification that has stood the test of time. Although it functions as an exhibition space, I was more intrigued by the fort’s architecture and its omnipresent watch over the seaside. Wandering its grounds, I imagined the stories that unfolded within those walls—sieges and defenses, laughter and camaraderie among soldiers. It’s incredible how history can be woven effortlessly into the fabric of a vibrant town like Ostend.
Next, I wandered towards the city centre, where the Art Deco architecture draws me in. The architecture tells the tale of Ostend’s golden age as a fashionable resort town in the 19th century, and I find myself snapping pictures of the beautifully ornate buildings.
Another must-see is the “Maria Hendrika Park,” a serene oasis tucked away in the city. The lush greenery and vibrant flowers provide a peaceful respite from the bustling beach scene. I take a moment to relax on a bench, letting the gentle breeze ruffle my hair while I plan my next move.
I decided it was time to explore more of Ostende’s charm. The lively beachfront markets were calling. Stalls laden with fresh seafood, handcrafted jewelry, and local delicacies lined the nearby streets, each a testament to the vibrant culture of the city. I browsed the market with curiosity, sampling the catches of the day—sweet, succulent shrimp bursting with flavour—an ideal pairing for the sunny afternoon.
After some retail therapy, I decided to wander toward the marina. This area showcases Ostende’s maritime flair, with lavish yachts bobbing in the water. The port was alive with fishermen unloading their daily catch and small boats returning from the open sea. The blend of maritime tradition and modern flair emanating from the waterfront makes it an exciting area to explore.
However, I realized it was time to start my journey back to Brussels so I reluctantly made my way back to the train station. My heart was full, having experienced a whirlwind of sights, flavours, and joyous moments. The journey home provided a perfect time to reflect on my day in Ostend, and as the landscape shifted from coastal charm to urban familiarity, I felt a sense of gratitude for the spontaneity of life.
Arriving back in Brussels, I carried with me more than just a few seashells and a satisfied stomach; I brought back the essence of the coast, an invigorating reminder that adventure could be just a train ride away. Ostend had rejuvenated my spirit, and as I stepped off the train, I felt ready to embrace all the excitement that Brussels had to offer once more.
