One city that I recently visited and instantly fell in love with is Liege. Located just one hour away from Brussels by train, Liege is a vibrant city with a rich history and plenty of things to see and do.
I started my day trip to Liege bright and early, catching an early morning train from Brussels Central Station. The journey was smooth and comfortable, and before I knew it, I had arrived at Liege-Guillemins Station, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful train stations in the world. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the station’s impressive modern architecture made for a stunning first impression of the city.
From the station, I made my way to the city centre on foot, passing by charming cobblestone streets lined with quaint cafes and boutiques. My first stop was the iconic Place Saint-Lambert, a bustling square surrounded by historic buildings and home to the Liege Town Hall. I marvelled at the grandeur of the architecture and took some time to soak in the lively atmosphere of the square.
Next, I wandered over to the nearby Palace of the Prince-Bishops, a magnificent Baroque building that now houses the Palais Provincial de Liege. I spent some time exploring the palace’s beautiful gardens and admiring its impressive facade, which provided a glimpse into Liege’s rich history as a centre of power and culture in the region.
After exploring the historic sites in the city centre, it was time for a spot of lunch. Liege is famous for its culinary delights, and I couldn’t wait to try some of the local specialities. I made my way to a traditional brasserie to sample Liege’s most famous dish, the boulets a la Liegeoise. These hearty meatballs smothered in a sweet and tangy sauce made from cider and sirop de Liege were absolutely delicious and left me craving more.
With a full belly, I set off to explore Liege’s art and culture scene. I visited the Museum of Walloon Art, which showcases works by local artists and provides a fascinating insight into the region’s artistic heritage. I also made sure to stop by La Boverie, a beautiful museum housed in a former spa building that hosts a diverse range of temporary exhibitions.
As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn to the banks of the Meuse River, which runs through the heart of Liege. I took a leisurely stroll along the riverfront, admiring the picturesque scenery and watching the boats go by. The peaceful atmosphere was a stark contrast to the bustling city centre, and I relished the opportunity to relax and unwind by the water.
As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Liege-Guillemins Station to catch the train back to Brussels. On the journey home, I reflected on my day trip to Liege and felt grateful for the opportunity to explore such a vibrant and fascinating city. From its historic landmarks to its delicious cuisine and picturesque riverfront, Liege had captured my heart and left me eager to return again soon. For anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Brussels for a day, I highly recommend a trip to Liege – you won’t be disappointed.
