For a Maltese traveller like me, perched on an island kissed by the Mediterranean sun, the prospect of a Scottish adventure is a thrilling departure. A day trip in Edinburgh – the majestic city of kings and poets – felt like stepping into a tale of enchantment and history.

My journey began from Heathrow Airport, a whirlwind of bustling terminals as I boarded my flight. Arriving the evening before, I was greeted by the cool, crisp Edinburgh air, a refreshing contrast to Malta’s balmy breeze. I settled into my charming hotel just outside the city centre, excitement bubbling as I prepared for an unforgettable day ahead.

The next morning, I woke up to the brisk Scottish air that invigorated my senses and outlined the agenda for the day ahead. As I stepped outside my hotel, the sky was a canvas painted with soft pastels. With my senses awakened, I ventured toward Edinburgh Castle, perched atop Castle Rock. The ancient fortress felt like a guardian over the city, its stone walls a testament to centuries of history.

The short walk toward the castle was filled with the buzz of morning visitors, both locals and tourists, eager to soak up the history. As I approached, the imposing structure came into view, casting a long shadow in the early light. I didn’t really have the time to enter the castle as I only had one full day in the city but it was still amazing to see from the outside.

I then made my way down the Royal Mile, a historic street that served as the heart of Edinburgh. With its medieval alleys and vibrant shops, the Royal Mile was alive with chatter and clinking teacups from tiny cafés. I stopped briefly to admire the intricate architecture, snapping photos of the stunning exteriors.

As I ambled along, I found myself intrigued by various shops selling Scottish souvenirs. I carefully selected a delicate tartan scarf, knowing it would keep me warm on the cooler Maltese nights ahead. Satisfied with my small token, I continued to the majestic St Giles Cathedral, with its intricate stained glass windows and soaring arches. The tranquility inside provided a momentary escape from the lively streets outside.

By now, my stomach rumbled, reminding me of the importance of fueling my adventures. A short walk led me to the Grassmarket, a lively square with bustling pubs and cafés. The atmosphere was infectious; locals intertwined with visitors, all enjoying the day as much as I was.

Feeling reenergized, I wandered the charming cobblestone streets of Cockburn Street, marvelling at its colourful buildings. Each twist and turn led to photo-worthy spots that spoke to my love for travel. As I reached the bottom of the street, Victoria Street greeted me—a curving thoroughfare that felt like a fairytale.

Following that, I made my way to Calton Hill, intrigued by the promise of breathtaking vistas. The ascent was gradual, allowing me to catch my breath in preparation for what lay ahead. Upon reaching the top, I was rewarded with spectacular views of the city, from the iconic Edinburgh skyline to Arthur’s Seat standing majestically in the distance.

The National Monument of Scotland, reminiscent of the Parthenon, added a historical touch to the picturesque scene. This was the perfect spot for photos, and I couldn’t help but think how lucky I was to experience such beauty. It felt surreal, standing high above my surroundings, far from the sunlit shores of Malta.

Back down from the hill and with the sun beginning to set, I made my way to the Vennel, a hidden gem offering stunning views of Edinburgh Castle. Standing at this vantage point with the castle illuminated against the vibrant night sky, I felt grateful for having experienced such remarkable moments throughout the day.

The day wasn’t quite over though. With the enticing glow of the Edinburgh nightlife beckoning, I decided to stroll along the Royal Mile once again, the ambiance enchanting under the night sky. Street performers infused life into the evening, their music a joyous celebration of the city’s vibrant culture. As I listened, I felt a sense of unity—whether in Malta or Edinburgh, the love for music, food, and community bonds us all.
As I returned to my hotel, I couldn’t shake the feeling of enchantment that had enveloped me throughout the day. Edinburgh had offered me a tapestry of history, adventure, and cultural richness, a world apart from my Maltese island life. With dreams of castles and lush landscapes filling my mind, I prepared for an early flight back to the sun-kissed shores of Malta the following morning.
