I was about to embark on a two-day adventure in London, a city steeped in history, vibrant culture, and unbounded energy. Staying at my cousin’s cozy flat in St Albans provided the perfect base for my explorations, combining the allure of city life with the tranquility of the English countryside.
With just two full days to explore the capital, I was determined to make every moment count. I would embrace the eclectic energy of the city, bask in its historical grandeur, and soak up the sights, sounds, and flavours that make London an irresistible destination.
After a refreshing night’s sleep, I set out early, armed with a trusty map (well, Google Maps actually!) and my curiosity. My first stop was Buckingham Palace. As the early morning sunlight bathed the iconic facade in golden hues, I joined a small crowd hoping to catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony. Though it became apparent that I had missed the time slot, the regal ambiance and the sentinels standing guard offered a perfect beginning to my London excursion.
From Buckingham, I wandered through the serene paths of St James’s Park, one of the capital’s Royal Parks. The park, alive with the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft quacking of ducks, was a beautiful canvas against the backdrop of the palace. I leisurely meandered along the water, finally heading towards Westminster, where the imposing silhouette of Big Ben greeted me. The iconic clock tower, alongside the majestic Westminster Abbey, defined the city’s skyline. I took a moment to snap some photos against the gloomy grey sky.
Next up, I strolled across Westminster Bridge for a breathtaking view of the London Eye. I admired the giant Ferris wheel from a distance, imagining the sweeping panoramas it must offer at the top. The merging of modern marvel and historic architecture truly encapsulates London’s unique character.
After taking plenty of pictures, I headed north for a lunch stop at the vibrant Borough Market. Overflowing with delicious street food options, I found a little stall serving the most aromatic falafel wrap, perfectly seasoned and bursting with flavour. Over lunch, I watched locals and tourists alike revel in the vibrant atmosphere, hinting at London’s rich multicultural identity.
With my taste buds satisfied, it was time to return to the heart of the city. A short walk took me to The Shard, London’s tallest building. Standing at its base, I marvelled at its glass-tapered structure; though I wouldn’t be venturing up today, the views from above are certainly on my list for a future trip.
Next, I crossed the iconic Millennium Bridge, taking in the juxtaposition of modern and historic London. The bridge, with its breath-taking views over the Thames, led me to the famed St Paul’s Cathedral. As I made my way into the vibrant South Bank area, I took a moment to appreciate the lively ambience surrounding me.
As the day turned to dusk, I wandered into the bustling atmosphere of Soho and Covent Garden. The colourful streets pulsed with life, and I couldn’t resist a quick detour to see the infamous Amy Winehouse Statue in Camden Town. Nestled near the bustling Camden Market, it was touching to see a tribute to the late singer immortalized near her roots. After snapping a selfie, I dove into the eclectic shops and stalls of Camden Market.
From vintage clothing to unique artisan crafts, the energy was intoxicating, the market alive with the chatter of shoppers and the scent of delicious food wafting in the air. I sampled some authentic street food; nothing quite compares to the flavour of properly spiced international dishes cooked right in front of you!
As evening fell, I stepped away from Camden and hopped on the Tube back towards Westminster to enjoy the city lights. A slow stroll around the edge of St James’s Park brought me back to the area where I began my day. The iconic spots looked even more majestic lit up at night — a glorious backdrop to my evening.
By the time I reached Piccadilly Circus, the sheer vibrance of the neon-lit advertising was an invigorating sight. The energy here is infectious, with street performers entertaining both locals and tourists alike. I took a moment to soak it all in — this was London at its most dynamic. The evening ended on a high note with a visit to a cozy pub near Covent Garden to unwind before heading back to St Albans.
Day Two: A Towering Adventure
On my second day, I was ready to immerse myself in more of London’s iconic sights. I headed straight to the Tower of London, a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to the Crown Jewels. The fortress, with its daunting walls, stood as a testament to centuries of history.
I grabbed a quick coffee nearby before gazing across the River Thames towards Tower Bridge, one of the most emblematic symbols of London. It was a pleasure to admire the bridge up close — its gothic towers and bright blue colour were just breathtaking.
Afterward, I made my way to the vibrant Covent Garden, an architectural gem with its intricate roof and colourful stalls. I found a lovely spot to grab a light snack while enjoying the stunning surroundings. The market’s history and the infectious energy around me made me feel deeply connected to the city.
Not far from Leadenhall, I ascended to the Garden at 120. After signing in, I was thrilled to step into this urban oasis. The views over London were spectacular; I could see the sprawling cityscape below and even spot the London Eye and St Paul’s Cathedral in the distance. The lush greenery contrasted beautifully with the skyline, making this my favourite stop of the trip.
With my camera full of photos and my heart full of memories, I continued my journey through the city. I took a leisurely walk along Oxford Street, exploring its shops until I found myself back in Soho for a late lunch. I indulged with some fresh dim sum before making my way up to the London Bridge area for one last look at the river.
As I returned to St Albans, reflecting on my remarkable two days in London, I felt invigorated. My heart brimmed with rich experiences, mouthwatering flavours, and the vibrant energy of this multi-faceted city. The next morning, I’d be off to Edinburgh, another chapter in my travel stories. Leaving London behind was bittersweet, but I knew I was taking a piece of its vibrant spirit back with me to Malta—the unending fascination of its history, its lively pulse, and the charming encounters I’d experienced during my stay.
