I was staying in Trebinje but driving around in my rental car around southern Bosnia & Herzegovina was very easy and offered stunning views of the rugged mountains, charming villages and picturesque landscapes that make it a truly unforgettable experience.
One of the must-visit destinations in southern Bosnia is the city of Mostar, famous for its iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge) that spans the Neretva River. The bridge, originally built in the 16th century, was destroyed during the Bosnian War in the 1990s but has since been rebuilt to its former glory. Walking across the Old Bridge and taking in the breathtaking views of the river below is a must-do experience for any visitor to Mostar. The city is also home to a vibrant old town filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants serving traditional Bosnian cuisine.
Another highlight of the south is the historic town of Blagaj, located just a short drive from Mostar. Blagaj is famous for its stunning Dervish monastery, perched on the banks of the Buna River and surrounded by steep cliffs. Visitors can explore the monastery, enjoy a meal at one of the riverside restaurants, and even take a boat ride through the crystal-clear waters of the Buna Cave. Blagaj is a peaceful and picturesque town that offers a glimpse into Bosnia’s medieval past.
For nature lovers, the south of Bosnia offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures. The region is home to the rugged Dinaric Alps, a mountain range that stretches across several countries in the Balkans. Hiking and trekking opportunities abound in the Alps, with trails ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs. One of the most popular destinations for outdoor enthusiasts is the beautiful Prenj mountain range, known for its jagged peaks and stunning views.
In addition to its natural beauty, the south of Bosnia is also home to several fascinating historic sites. One of the most impressive is the medieval fortress of Počitelj, located on a hill overlooking the Neretva River. The fortress dates back to the 14th century and offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can explore the ancient walls and towers of the fortress, as well as the picturesque mosque and clock tower that stand within its walls.
Another historic site worth visiting in the south is the town of Stolac, known for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture and ancient burial sites. Stolac is home to the stunning Radimlja necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site that features over 130 carved tombstones dating back to the 15th century. Visitors can wander among the ancient graves and marvel at the intricate carvings that adorn the tombstones.
Of course, no visit to the south of Bosnia would be complete without sampling the delicious local cuisine. Bosnian food is known for its hearty and flavorful dishes, with influences from Turkish, Hungarian, and Mediterranean cuisine. Some must-try dishes include cevapi (grilled minced meat), burek (flaky pastry filled with meat or cheese), and baklava (sweet pastry made with nuts and honey). Visitors can enjoy these dishes at traditional Bosnian restaurants or try their hand at cooking them themselves with a local cooking class.
Overall, the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a region rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. From the charming city of Mostar to the rugged mountains of the Dinaric Alps, there is something for every traveler to discover and enjoy in this diverse and welcoming part of the country. Whether you’re interested in historic sites, outdoor adventures, or simply relaxing and soaking up the local culture, the south of Bosnia has something for everyone. So pack your bags and start planning your next adventure in this hidden gem of southeastern Europe.
