As a resident of Brussels, I am fortunate to live in a bustling city with rich history, culture, and charm. However, every now and then I crave a change of scenery and a break from the daily hustle and bustle of city life. This is where Lille comes in. Just a short train ride away from Brussels, Lille is a charming city in northern France that offers a perfect escape for a weekend getaway. Steeped in history and culture, Lille has something to offer every type of traveller.
One of the things that I love most about Lille is its stunning architecture. The city is a treasure trove of historic buildings, from the beautiful 17th-century Vieille Bourse, a former stock exchange turned book market, to the grand Palais des Beaux-Arts, one of the largest museums in France. Walking through the cobbled streets of Lille, I am constantly in awe of the remarkable blend of Flemish and French architecture that gives the city its unique character.
One of my favourite spots in Lille is the Grand Place, a bustling square lined with colourful buildings that date back to the 17th century. Here, I love to sit at one of the outdoor cafes, sip on a café au lait, and watch the world go by. The Grand Place is also home to the beautiful Vieille Bourse, where I always make sure to browse the stalls selling old books, vintage postcards, and other treasures.
Another architectural gem in Lille is the Hospice Comtesse, a 17th-century hospital turned museum that offers a glimpse into the city’s history. The museum showcases a range of exhibits, including artifacts from the Middle Ages, Renaissance paintings, and a recreated convent garden. Visitors can also explore the beautiful courtyard and gardens, which offer a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Lille is also a city with a rich history, and there are plenty of historic sites to explore. One of the most famous is the Citadel of Lille, a massive fortress that was built by Louis XIV in the 17th century to protect the city from invaders. Today, the Citadel is a popular park where locals and visitors alike can stroll along the tree-lined paths, enjoy a picnic, or take in the stunning views of the city.

The city is famous for its rich and hearty dishes, such as carbonnade flamande (beef stewed in beer) and potjevleesch (a terrine of meats). One of my favourite places to sample these traditional dishes is the Estaminet Chez la Vieille, a charming restaurant housed in a 17th-century building.
In addition to its traditional cuisine, Lille also offers a vibrant food scene with a wide range of international restaurants and trendy cafes. I love exploring the vibrant Vieux Lille neighborhood, where I can find everything from cozy creperies to chic cocktail bars.
For those who love to shop, Lille is a true paradise. The city is home to a wealth of unique boutiques, designer stores, and bustling markets where I can find everything from vintage clothing to handmade crafts. I love browsing the stalls at the Wazemmes market, where I can find fresh produce, local cheeses, and artisanal goods. For those looking for high-end fashion, the Rue Esquermoise is lined with upscale boutiques and luxury shops.
One of my favourite things to do in Lille is simply wandering through the city’s charming streets and soaking up its vibrant atmosphere. The city is a true melting pot of cultures, with influences from both France and Belgium evident in its food, architecture, and language. The people of Lille are warm and welcoming, and I always feel at home in this bustling city.
Finally, Lille is a city that is easy to explore and navigate, thanks to its well-connected public transportation system and compact city centre. Whether you choose to travel by metro, bus, or bike, getting around Lille is a breeze, allowing you to see and experience all that the city has to offer without any hassle. As I make my way back to Brussels, I always leave Lille with a sense of contentment and gratitude for the time spent in this vibrant city.
