Having lived in sunny Malta for several years, I was eager for a new adventure that would whisk me away from the familiar Mediterranean charm. Niš, a city in southern Serbia, caught my attention with its rich history, vibrant culture, and a burgeoning food scene. As I booked a direct flight from Malta, I could hardly contain my excitement for the weekend ahead.

Arrival in Niš
Touching down at Niš Airport around 22:30hrs, the cool evening air was a refreshing change from the balmy Maltese nights. The airport was modest yet welcoming, and after a quick transfer, I arrived at my Airbnb—an inviting little flat in the heart of the city. The charm of the neighbourhood was evident, with cobbled streets and warm, glowing lights illuminating the surroundings.

Day One: Exploring the City
Awakening to the sounds of the city, I started my first full day with a traditional Serbian breakfast. I found a local café that served delicious fresh bread with ajvar, a pepper-based condiment, and a hearty omelette. Energised, I set out to explore.

Niš is known for its vibrant streets, where modernity meets history. I wandered through the bustling Čair Park, a green oasis perfect for people-watching and enjoying the fresh morning air. The park was alive with joggers and families, showcasing the city’s vibrant community spirit.

Next, I ambled towards the iconic Niš Fortress, a stunning structure that dates back to the 18th century. The fortifications and surrounding park were a perfect backdrop for photos and a leisurely stroll. As I explored the grounds, I couldn’t help but admire the blend of history and natural beauty that defines Niš.

For lunch, I headed to a local bakery, where I bought a freshly baked burek. After exchanging a few friendly words with the shopkeeper, I grabbed my warm parcel and headed out, eager to enjoy Serbia’s delicious street food.

In the afternoon, I made my way to the bustling market in the city centre, where the stalls overflowed with fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and handmade crafts. The vibrant colours and inviting aromas were a feast for the senses, and I couldn’t resist picking up a few souvenirs to take back to Malta.

As evening fell, I joined the locals for dinner at a popular eatery known for its grilled meats. The atmosphere was lively, and I enjoyed a platter of ćevapi—grilled minced meat served with onions and bread—while listening to live music. This experience perfectly encapsulated the warmth and camaraderie of Serbian dining culture.

Day Two: Nature and Adventure
On my second day, I decided to venture beyond the city limits. After a hearty breakfast, I hopped on a bus to the nearby Sićevo Gorge, known for its stunning landscapes and outdoor activities. The journey took about half an hour, and as we approached the gorge, I was greeted by breathtaking views of towering cliffs and lush greenery.

Upon arrival, I spent hours hiking along the well-marked trails, absorbing the natural beauty and serenity of the area. The sound of the river flowing and the birds chirping created a perfect soundtrack to my adventure. I stopped for a picnic lunch, enjoying the peace of my surroundings, and marvelled at the dramatic rock formations that framed the gorge.

Returning to Niš in the late afternoon, I took some time to rest before heading out for my final evening. This time, I chose a vibrant street filled with cafés and restaurants. I settled into a spot with outdoor seating, where I could watch the world go by. I ordered a plate of sarmice (pork and veal meat stuffed in vibe leaves), another local delicacy, and enjoyed a leisurely dinner as the sun set.

Departure: A Bittersweet Farewell
As my time in Niš came to an end, I spent my final morning leisurely packing and soaking in the atmosphere one last time. I took a stroll through the streets, stopping at a bakery for a final taste of Serbian pastries before heading back to the airport.

While I was sad to leave, I felt enriched by the experiences and connections I had made in just a short span of time. Niš had offered me a blend of history, nature, and delectable cuisine that left a lasting impression.

As my flight took off, I looked back at the city that had welcomed me with open arms. Niš may be a small city compared to others, but it boasts a charm and warmth that is truly unforgettable. I returned to Malta with a heart full of memories and a promise to return.
