After two enchanting days immersed in the vibrant culture and stunning architecture of Seville, I found myself yearning for more of Andalusia’s hidden gems. With my flight departing in the evening of the third day, I seized the opportunity to hire a car and set off on a day trip to the picturesque town of Carmona, along with visits to Italica and Castillo de Alcalá de Guadaíra. However, it was Carmona that truly captured my heart, offering a delightful blend of history, charm, and stunning landscapes.
My journey began with a scenic drive to Castillo de Alcalá de Guadaíra, a magnificent castle perched atop a hill overlooking the Guadaíra River. The castle, with its impressive fortifications and panoramic views, offers a glimpse into the rich history of the region. Strolling through the grounds, I admired the medieval architecture and the remnants of ancient walls that once protected this strategic site. The surrounding parkland, with its picturesque trails along the river, provided a serene backdrop for a leisurely walk. While Alcalá de Guadaíra was a delightful start to my day, the real highlight was yet to come.
After soaking in the charm of the castle, I set my sights on Carmona. Just a short drive away, this hidden gem is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, Seville, but it boasts a wealth of history and character that is hard to resist. As I approached the town, its stunning skyline came into view, dominated by the impressive Church of Santa Maria and the ancient walls that encircle the old town.
Upon arrival, I parked the car and began my exploration on foot. The narrow, cobbled streets of Carmona exude a sense of old-world charm, with whitewashed buildings adorned with colourful flowerpots and wrought-iron balconies. It felt like stepping back in time, and I found myself enchanted by the town’s vibrant atmosphere.

Dining al fresco allowed me to enjoy the sun-drenched atmosphere, with the sounds of laughter and conversation filling the air—a perfect way to embrace the local culture.
With time slipping away, I made my way to the final stop of my day: Itálica. This ancient Roman city, located just a short drive from Carmona, is famous for its well-preserved ruins, including stunning mosaics and an impressive amphitheatre that once hosted gladiatorial games. As I wandered through the remnants of this once-thriving metropolis, I was in awe of the scale and grandeur of the structures that stood before me. The tranquillity of Itálica, combined with its rich history, made for a perfect ending to my day of exploration.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the landscape, I realised that my impromptu trip had been a resounding success. Carmona, with its captivating charm and historical significance, had stolen my heart. It may not be as well-known as Seville, but it certainly deserves a place on any traveller’s itinerary.
With the historical treasures of Italica leaving a lasting impression, I headed back to the airport, reflecting on the day’s adventures. Carmona is a gem that deserves to be explored, a place where history, culture, and nature intertwine seamlessly.
