A country most of us know nothing about. But I wanted to travel here and find out what the real Moldova is like, beyond the continuous negative news headlines in the west. So I booked a direct flight from Brussels to the capital Chișinău, to explore the country and try to learn more about this little known country on the edge of eastern Europe. Welcome to Moldova, my 50th country!
As soon as I stepped off the plane at Chișinău International Airport, I knew I was in for an adventure. Moldova, a small country tucked away in Eastern Europe, has long been on my list of places to visit. With its rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality, I couldn’t wait to explore all that this hidden gem had to offer.
https://www.discovercars.com/?a_aid=travellingismypassionOne of the first things I did upon arrival was rent a car from the airport. Having my own wheels gave me the freedom to explore at my own pace and truly immerse myself in the local culture. Driving through the rolling hills and lush vineyards of Moldova, I felt like I was in a different world. The roads were surprisingly well-maintained, and the countryside was dotted with charming villages and picturesque churches.
I had a five-night stay in the heart of the city, and I couldn’t wait to start exploring. My first stop was Hotel Chișinău, a vintage hotel from Soviet times, where I had decided to spend my first night out of five. The other four nights I had booked at an Airbnb with gated parking for my rental car.
Chișinău is a vibrant city with a rich history and cultural heritage. It is known for its diverse architecture, mixing Soviet-style buildings with neoclassical and contemporary structures. The city also boasts a vibrant cultural scene, with numerous museums, theatres, and art galleries showcasing the country’s rich history and heritage.
Chișinău is home to a diverse population, with a mix of Moldovan, Russian, Ukrainian, and Gagauz residents contributing to the city’s unique cultural identity. Visitors can explore the city’s parks, markets, and bustling city centre, experiencing the energy and charm of this bustling European capital.
I spent plenty of my time wandering the tree-lined streets, admiring the grand buildings and sampling delicious local cuisine. The Central Market was a highlight, with its stalls selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to handmade crafts and souvenirs.
One of the most memorable experiences I had in Chișinău was seeing the Arch of Triumph in Chișinău. It stands as a symbol of victory and resilience. Built in 1841 to commemorate the Russian victory over the Ottoman Empire, the arch features intricate carvings and statues. It has become a popular tourist attraction and a significant landmark in the city.
Of course, no trip to Moldova would be complete without sampling the local cuisine. I indulged in traditional dishes such as mamaliga (a type of cornmeal porridge), sarmale (cabbage rolls stuffed with meat and rice), and placinte (pastries filled with cheese or fruit). The food in Moldova is hearty and delicious, and I couldn’t get enough of it.
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the breakaway region of Transnistria. This unrecognized territory has a complex history and a unique cultural identity that sets it apart from the rest of Moldova. As I crossed the border into Transnistria, I felt like I was stepping back in time. The streets were lined with Soviet-era monuments and statues, and the atmosphere was decidedly more somber than in the rest of the country. Despite its troubled past, Transnistria has a certain charm that is hard to resist.
I spent one day exploring the capital city of Tiraspol, taking in the sights and sounds of this fascinating place. The highlight of my time in Transnistria was visiting the Dniester River, which forms the border between the region and the rest of Moldova. The river is a popular spot for picnicking and boating, and I enjoyed a relaxing afternoon by the water, watching the world go by.
Another memorable experience was a day trip to Old Orhei, a breathtaking archaeological complex located on a picturesque hill overlooking the Raut River. The area is home to ancient cave monasteries, medieval ruins, and stunning natural landscapes. I spent the day exploring the site, soaking in the history and beauty that surrounded me. It was a truly magical experience that I will never forget.
No trip to Moldova would be complete without a visit to the picturesque town of Soroca, known for its stunning medieval fortress perched on the banks of the Dniester River. The fortress, built in the 15th century, offers a glimpse into the country’s tumultuous history, with well-preserved walls, bastions, and towers that once served as a stronghold against invaders. Visitors can explore the fortress grounds, take in panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, and immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Moldova’s past.
Today, Soroca Fortress is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who come to admire its well-preserved architecture and learn about its fascinating history. In addition to its historical significance, Soroca Fortress also offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the river below, making it a picturesque spot for photography and relaxation. Overall, Soroca Fortress is a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in Moldova’s history and culture.
As my time in Moldova drew to a close, I found myself reluctant to leave. This small country had captured my heart with its beauty, history, and hospitality. From the bustling streets of Chișinău to the tranquil vineyards of the countryside, Moldova had offered me a truly unforgettable travel experience. Renting a car from the airport had been the perfect decision, allowing me to explore all that this charming country had to offer. Moldova may be a hidden gem, but it is one that should not be overlooked by any intrepid traveler.
